Interdisciplinarity and industry Transdisciplinarity integrates the natural, social and health sciences in a humanities context, and transcends their traditional boundaries. Endowing transdisciplinarity with the traditional attributes of scientific discipline – philosophical substantiation, concept, methodology, technological solutions – makes it possible to organically integrate it into the existing classification of scientific directions and scientific approaches. The terms multidisciplinary, cross-disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary are used to imply, in increasing order, different degrees of academic disciplinary synthesis and interaction. The latter, however, is the only one which aims to go also beyond all disciplines and understand the present world by achieving the unity of knowledge (Nicolescu, 1997).

A characteristic of a transdisciplinary approach is that each discipline as well as the societal actor can have different points of view and perceptions about the territory. Thus, all the ‘chunk’ concepts can assume different meanings and appear to be unarticulated with no points of contact, even though they sometimes use the same names.
